Description |
E. S. le Grange school in Potchefstroom
is a school for physically and mentally handicapped
children. There are about 252 pupils, ranging in age3-
21. About 75% of the learners are boarders. Many are
fully dependent, or came from broken home, so this is
the only real home they know. Learners are not only
scholastically stimulated, but developed in all wails of
life. Recognition of their achievements in sport and
schoolwork is extremely important to these special
learners. At prizegivining, all of them receive awards
according to their progress. There are 3 phrases, each
concentrating specifically on various developmental
aspects; Nursery – Plenty outside play to stimulate
physical development. All aspects of perception as well
as grooming, group activities and acceptance.
Junior – Emphasis on fine motor
–coordination and scholastic abilities to ensure that
learners can write or do handwork later on. Senior –
Focus on differential functional teaching. Girls are
taught cooking and needlework and boys woodwork etc. to
enable them to make a meaningful contribution to
society. Because many of learners cannot read or write,
they are visually and (audibly) by means of computers.
Sports are important to develop coordination and also
for the exercise.
Socialization is important to teach
the learners to converse and share. Lunch is compulsory
for day scholars and boarders, and attention given to
table manners and hygiene. The tuck-shop opens on Friday
to teach the pupils to make choices and to work with
money. Community involvement is important, and our choir
and percussion band are often invited to play at
functions. All the learners of E. S. le Grange are
always giving their best.
